To sound a global alarm of our crisis of consumption,
Fred George conceived of the Solar Peace Sculptures.
The works are inspired by Gerald Holtom´s 1958 emblem
for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, known as the peace sign.
Standing 58 feet high, the sculpture is constructed from
80 oil barrels, with a solar energy panel attached to each
barrel. The sculpture fabricates a sustainable resource that
feeds back into the city´s electrical grid. At a time when we
have never been more dependent on oil for our daily transport,
this donation of energy delivers a message of environmental
responsibility and social pride. Symbolically, this piece of
art represents a call to the world that the time of sole
reliance on fossil fuel is running out. The human casualties,
stemming from the oil wars, will only increase if we do not
embrace alternative energy. Employing solar power is an obvious
solution. For New York City and Germany it will become a great
symbol of energy conservation and a call for peace worldwide.
But the Solar Peace Sculpture is not only social commentary.
It is also an active commitment to energy conservation, transforming
a symbol of consumption into production by literally generating energy.
It is one of the first sculptures to continuously generate proceeds for
charitable donations from renewable resources.
